A tuberous terrestrial orchid with stem 30 -90cm in ht, leaves many erect, oblong, linear oblong or lanceolate flowers dull purple in cylindric spikes sepals and petals acute or obstuse. Tubers are Yellowish white or grayish in colour rounded or ovoid, translucent, odourless nearly tasteless. I t belongs to the terrestrial orchids family, which is commercially known as Salep Orchids, the tubers contain a bitter solid and a volatile oil. They are used as a farinaceous food, nervine tonic and a phrodisiac. They yield a lot of gelatinous substance with water and form a jelly that is supposed to be nutritious and very effective again st diarrhea, dysentery and chronic fevers.
