Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid of the popular Indian spice turmeric, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The other two curcuminoids are desmethoxycurcumin and bisdesmethoxycurcumin. Also known as Turmeric, it is used extensively in foods for adding both flavor as well as color. Turmeric has a long tradition of use in the Chinese and Ayurvedic systems of medicine. The rhizome or the root of turmeric has long been used in traditional Asian medicine to treat gastrointestinal upset and arthritic pain. It is used as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat digestive disorders, osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis, and cancer and liver problems as well as for the treatment of skin diseases. The active components of turmeric reduce the destructive activity of parasites or roundworms. It has been clinically proven that it gives a protective effect on the liver on animals, provides anti -tumor action and reduces inflammation. It also fights against infections and has several medicinal and healing properties. Turmeric has been used historically as a component of Indian Ayurvedic Medicine since 1900 BC to treat a wide variety of ailments. Research in the latter half of the 20th century has identified curcumin as responsible for most of the biological activity of turmeric.
